Cellulose Insulation for Your Northern Front Range Home
Cellulose attic and wall insulation is a popular option for many homeowners in Colorado. It’s affordable, environmentally-friendly, and highly energy-efficient.
If your home needs new insulation, you may have realized there are numerous insulation types available. However, if you want an environmentally friendly option, you should consider hiring a cellulose insulation contractor. Cellulose insulation is made from about 75 percent recycled newspaper and waste paper that’s been ground into a lightweight material. It is free from toxic chemicals like formaldehyde that can be in other building materials. This type of insulation can improve both comfort and energy efficiency. What You Need to Know About Cellulose
You may be considering cellulose insulation vs fiberglass or other types of insulation. There are two types of cellulose materials. Blown cellulose insulation is a dry fiber that’s blown into enclosed cavities and open attics, while spray cellulose insulation is dampened and sprayed into open wall cavities. Both types of insulation offer an R-value of around 3.5 per inch.
As with other types of materials, there are cellulose insulation pros and cons. Benefits of cellulose include:
Affordability. It is cheaper than spray foam insulation.
Soundproofing. When packed more densely than fiberglass, cellulose is a superior sound barrier.
Energy efficiency. Cellulose can reduce heating and cooling bills by around one-third.
Fire-resistance. Cellulose is treated with a chemical called borate, which is a flame retardant.
On the downside, it is important to note that cellulose insulation can cost more than fiberglass. In addition, the R-value of blown-in cellulose will reduce over time as the material sags and settles. Cellulose also absorbs moisture easily so it can be prone to rot and mold.

Derrick with Insulation Pros of Colorado came out to our home to provide a quote for service. He was very professional and after reviewing our needs, he recommended using a different product. I appreciate the fact that he could have have tried for the hard sell and given us service that didn't suit our needs, but chose not to. I asked him for a few business cards so I could hand them out if anyone asked for a referral.

finish. I was primarily concerned about acoustics and sound mitigation and they provided some great, practical advice about the trade-offs between the different materials and price/performance. They were very responsive to turning quotes and answers around quickly, and online (very modern for a contractor!). They even went the extra mile and installed some insulation around the bottom of the floating walls to provide extra fire blocking. They were super courteous and professional throughout the entire process - including cleaning up completely when the job was done. I'm very happy I went with Insulation Pros instead of having a dry wall contractor doing it. They do one thing, and they do it very well.

Benefits of Cellulose Insulation
Cellulose insulation offers numerous advantages for homeowners seeking energy efficiency and comfort. This eco-friendly material is made from recycled paper, making it a sustainable choice that reduces environmental impact while providing excellent thermal performance.
In addition to its environmental benefits, cellulose insulation effectively reduces heat transfer, which can lead to lower energy bills. Its dense composition also enhances soundproofing capabilities, making it ideal for homes in noisy environments. Furthermore, cellulose insulation is treated with fire retardants, ensuring safety and compliance with building codes.
Cellulose Insulation Installation Process
Understanding the installation process of cellulose insulation is essential for homeowners considering this option. The installation typically involves blowing the insulation into attics, walls, and other spaces using specialized equipment. This method allows for a seamless fill, ensuring maximum coverage and effectiveness.
Professional installers will assess your home’s specific needs, including existing insulation and air sealing requirements, to determine the best approach. This thorough assessment ensures that the cellulose insulation is installed correctly, maximizing its benefits for energy efficiency and comfort.
Comparing Cellulose Insulation to Other Types
When considering insulation options, it's important to compare cellulose insulation to other materials like fiberglass and spray foam. Cellulose is generally more cost-effective and environmentally friendly, while also offering superior soundproofing and thermal performance.
Unlike fiberglass, which can irritate the skin and lungs during installation, cellulose is safer to handle. On the other hand, spray foam insulation provides a higher R-value per inch but at a higher cost. Homeowners should weigh these factors based on their budget and insulation needs to make an informed decision.
Frequently Asked Questions About Cellulose Insulation
